with madonna releasing the sequel to the bible of pop (confessions on a dance floor... part one), and after recently coming across sam murphy's video series *this* where he asks artists what their perfect pop songs is, i couldn't help but start asking myself...
what is my perfect pop songs?

4/7/2026 10:12p.m.
i knew this was going to be fun but also difficult to choose because i have so many songs that i love and would easily consider a solid 10. but if i really had to choose, well what would it be? what actually makes a pop song "perfect" to me? and what kind of pop should even qualify for this list?🤔
so i decided to set a few criteria.
for me, the immaculate perfect "pop" song has to be:
1.) a song with an instant hook. whether it's the first beat or a catchy chorus, it has to make me feel connected or alive every single time it plays.
2.) a song with layers. whether it makes you feel something (sadness, happiness, goosebumps, whatever) or has a strong message behind it, it needs more than just a catchy melody.
3.) a song that can bring people together through its universal theme or emotion.
4.) and lastly, just to narrow this list down a little, i'm mainly sticking to electronic and synth-driven pop. think of the stereotypical version of "pop" that most people picture. i have way too many songs that lean more indie or rock sonically, so i'll save those for another time.
after setting those criteria, these were the first eight songs that instantly came to mind. i'll be doing a little deep dive into why each song made the list. will probably keep updating this whenever another song randomly pops into my head but first... let's get into it.🥳🥳
💿⛓️dancing on my own - robyn
this is the first song that comes up to my mind. to me, this is the blueprint. it ticks every single box on my criteria. it was also interesting watching sam murphy's series because so many artists immediately named this song too. so there's clearly something about it that just connects with so many people.
my favorite thing about this song is how it brings people together. i'll never scroll past a live performance clip where hundreds or even thousands of people are screaming the chorus together like one giant acapella pop ritual. like that's exactly what music is supposed to do.-bring people together!!!
i also love how the song has become this niche anthem that somehow keeps finding its way into so many different shows and movies. i first heard it during the lip sync performance between raven and jujubee on drag race all stars season 1, and it completely stuck with me. the song already carries so much emotion on its own, but the way they performed it made it even more heart-wrenching.
then there was girls, another show i absolutely adore, where it soundtracked one of my favorite moments in the entire series. and most recently, i just watched voicemails for isabelle, and i loved how they used this song as an actual storytelling tool instead of just throwing it into the second thought soundtrack during post-production. if anything, that movie gave the song a whole new life for a younger generation. i genuinely think this song is going to be immortal. like it keeps finding new audiences every few years because it's just THAT timeless.‼️ so this is the ultimate pop perfection for me.
💿🩰 jump - madonna
it's almost impossible to pick just one perfect pop song from the mother of pop herself. she has way too many pop perfections in her catalog. but if i had to choose one, it would be this.
it is the song i always come back to whenever i feel stuck. the messages and the big synth sounds that feel like adrenaline pumping through every beat are something i can never resist. that's why this is currently #1 song on my running playlist rn lol.
since i'm already talking about her, i might as well share a few thoughts on confessions ii. tbh my expectations were ridiculously high because COADF is one of my favorite pop albums of all time. so following it up was always going to be difficult. when i first listened, i wasn't completely convinced. but after listening again and letting it sink in, everything eventually clicked.
the thing is, it feels much more like a blend of her '90s work than a direct continuation of confessions. and it's so good on its own. i saw someone describe it as "meeting a wise woman in the club who's giving you life advice while you're at the smoking area" and honestly that's exactly what it feels like. i think the album would've stood perfectly well on its own without borrowing the name of the predecessor (just my opinion tho.) okay maybe revisit ray of light next mother... i need you to call william orbit on the phone NOW!!!!!
💿💓all the lovers - kylie minogue
this song completely enchanted me the very first time i came across a live performance of it when i was younger.
it was the first song that introduced me to kylie, and i've been a fan ever since. for the longest time, i could never explain why i felt so connected to her and her music, especially this song. then one day i found out we were born just one day apart... and suddenly everything made sense lol. there's something overwhelmingly optimistic about this song that makes me happy every time it comes on.
💿🪩fast slow disco - st. vincent
if dancing on my own had a little sister, i think it'd be this. it's euphoric and heartbreaking at the same time, which is apparently my favorite genre of pop. also... this was back when jack antonoff used to be so good. i'm afraid right now it kind of feels like he's been recycling the same beat over and over again. i think he needs to take a break and regain his creative spark. you're welcome!!!!!!
💿✂️supercut - lorde
now i'm fully in my flow state atp and somehow this has turned into my jack antonoff section of the list. so obviously the next song that came to mind was this. i meannnn... what else is there to say? this song gives me everything i could possibly want.
💿🦢hair - lady gaga
just like madonna, gaga has way too many pop perfections to choose from. but i'm picking this because it's the one that resonates with me the most, and it also brings a different emotion to this list. "i'm as free as my hair." it's such a simple lyric, but somehow it's incredibly effective. i also love how the song starts almost like a ballad before exploding into full-on pop. that's one of my favorite things about gaga's discography.
another thing i'll always admire about her is how she can strip almost any song down into a piano ballad if she wants to. so when she chose this as the surprise acoustic song at my stop i went NUTSSS lol. it felt like such a full-circle moment for me.😻
💿🎳save a kiss - jessie ware
this might not be as sentimental as the rest of the songs on this list, but i don't think a perfect pop song always needs some deep, layered meaning. sometimes it just needs to make you feel something. well i could argue that this entire album is pop perfection. if i ever change this list from perfect pop songs to perfect pop albums, this one's making the cut for sure. (along with confessions on a dance floor, born this way, ray of light... wait... maybe i should just write that list next!!!)
💿🫵🏻 your type - carly rae jepsen
it's officially gotten to the point where i'm tired of writing LMFAOO (such a gemini thing) but what more can i even say about this? it captures such a universal feeling of not being enough for someone. almost everyone has experienced that at some point lol. and you can dance to it too!!!! that is the magic of pop!!!!!
full list:
that's it for now. maybe i'll do another edition or an album version instead who knows. it honestly depends on my mood. the only reason i ended up writing this much is because i've been so obsessed with madonna's new album loll. maybe the next time i discover a new pop gem, i'll come back and update this list.
