got so obsessed with this movie that i immediately had the urge to PICK UP A PEN (well, a keyboard, actually) and start writing right after watching it. and now i'm already on my second viewing, which should tell you exactly how obsessed i am.

it's funny bc the last film i wrote about was also one where architecture and space felt like a protagonist (here). maybe that's becoming one of my favorite tropes? idk. but i absolutely love the way this turns space itself into a horror antagonist like... honey, i had goosebumps near the end. the creativity behind making something as familiar as architectural space feel so deeply uncanny is genuinely impressive. and the fact that all of this originated from a single image????? kane parsons, you're a genius. (and props to the og creator too. i don't know who you are, but i hope you've received all the flowers you deserve.)

this movie has basically every ingredient i love: psychological thriller? spatial horror?? sci-fi horror?and even a touch of lynchian weirdness. what i especially appreciated was how refreshing it felt to see these elements combined into something that feels so modern. and even the performances from renate and chiwetel ejiofor are fantasticccc. their performances make it this film feel more convincing. (finn bennett... call me)

i think part of the reason i adore this movie so much is that i've been a fan of kane parsons original short films for years. this film feels like a expansion of that world, with little easter eggs throughout for the fans. it was satisfying to watch a mythology i've followed online make its way to the big screen. if this continues to be handled well, i think it could become a solid franchise with nearly infinite possibilities.

livinggg for all the alyssa adwards memes rn.

that said, i'm not surprised by the mixed reactions. the hype surrounding this movie has been enormous and tbh i don't think it's for everyone either. but if you're into slow-burn tension, psychological horror, liminal spaces, and the unsettling atmosphere, you'll probably love it. for me, it's absolutely a must-watch. (then again, if you know me, you know i'm very easy to please, so take that with a grain of salt.)

p.s. i love how right when the end credits ended, all the lights inside the cinema suddenly came on and i got actual CHILLS because it felt like something straight out of one of the backrooms levels lol. then i walked out of my late-night screening into an almost completely empty mall. just pure emptiness. a real-life liminal space.AAHHH. i live!!!!🐈🐈🐈🐈½meows
